When Athena (in disguise) visits Ithaca, she first receives a hospitable welcome from Telemachus (1.144-46) and then gets the usual barrage of questions that strangers face throughout the epic (1.197-204), which are designed to elicit indications of reputation. Athena, whose curse initially caused Odysseus' wanderings, now wants to forgive and bring him home. Apparently all the gods, except for vengeful Poseidon, hold Odysseus in high regard. Zeus himself affirms Odysseus' character (1.78-80). One's reputation is determined by how others view him, assessing his character, values, and behavior according to the prevailing social standards and mores. In the world of Odysseus, one's most treasured possession is his good reputation. Throughout, people are responsible for their choices but always susceptible to intervention by the gods. These include hospitality, reputation, revenge, and power. Homer also introduces several themes that will recur throughout the epic. The other is centered in Ithaca where Odysseus' wife, Penelope, struggles to ward off a number of suitors and hopes for reliable word from or about her husband. One is the story of Odysseus who is held captive on Ogygia by Calypso. Almost immediately, he delineates two plots that eventually will merge. Homer uses the epic's opening to introduce the plot, the theme, and the characters of the work. She predicts that his father will return and insists that the prince must stand up to the suitors and seek more information about Odysseus. She suggests that Zeus dispatch Hermes to liberate Odysseus from Calypso while Athena visits Ithaca to advise King Odysseus' son, Telemachus.ĭisguised as Mentes, an old friend of Odysseus, Athena counsels Telemachus. Meanwhile, Odysseus' wife, Penelope, is besieged by suitors at his home in Ithaca.Īt a divine council on Mount Olympus, Athena pleads with her father, Zeus, to take pity on Odysseus and allow him to return home. Odysseus has incurred the wrath of Poseidon, god of the sea, by blinding his son Polyphemus the Cyclops. He is being held captive on the island Ogygia by the "bewitching nymph" (1.17) Calypso who wants him for her husband. Odysseus, the reader is told, is the only Greek survivor of the Trojan War who has not yet returned home or died trying. Homer opens The Odyssey with an invocation to the Muse of epic poetry and asks for her guidance in telling the story of a man who has experienced many twists and turns of fate and has suffered many hardships.

CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. Besides that, nurses go through a range of emotions after the death of a patient such as fear, guilt and self-blame. Studies have shown that a considerable number of nurses experience difficulties in communicating with the families of dying patients and lack end-of-life communication skills, which is one of the manifestations of the lack of CDC. It can be said that nurses’ CDC is of great value to clinical care, and to individual nurses as well as patients and their families. CDC is one of the important professional competencies of nurses and the key to the quality of hospice care it is closely related to burnout, compassion fatigue, job satisfaction, and personal quality of life. Therefore, it is essential for nursing managers and educators to investigate the risk factors and influencing mechanisms associated with nurses’ CDC, which may provide a basis for developing effective and targeted strategies.Īs clinical staff who contacts most frequently with end-stage patients and their families, and who is most exposed to death, nurses play an important role in hospice care. Against the backdrop of the current aging population and COVID-19 epidemic, a high level of CDC among nurses is particularly required. Poor CDC has been showed to increase nurses’ burnout, compassion fatigue, negative emotional distress and job dissatisfaction, which ultimately affects the quality of care for patients. Findings in China also showed that nurses were less well prepared in coping with death. A study found that 33.33% of the nurses did not cope well when they faced the death of the patient. Nurses’ coping with death competence (CDC) includes their competence to deal with death-related events, such as communicating with bereaved families, effectively dealing with negative emotions caused by death events, and providing hospice care for patients. The importance of nurses in death education and hospice as implementers of hospice care, promoters of death education, and one of the populations most exposed to death cannot be overstated. Death education is one of the basic and important parts of hospice care, yet it is still not widely available in China. A 2015 Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report showed that mainland China ranked only 71 out of 80 countries and territories in terms of quality of death. China has promoted the development of hospice care through economic and policy approaches, but it has not yet formed a good development trend and still cannot fill the huge demand gap. Hospice care has made rapid progress in some East Asian countries, such as Japan and Korea, although it started late. The hospice care in European and American countries started early and has become an important part of the social medical and health care system. Hospice care originated in the UK, which has always been in the leading position in the world, with a high level of national awareness and participation, and a well-developed system. With the development of aging population, the change of disease spectrum and the prominence of excessive medical problems, hospice care has gradually attracted attention and become one of the major global health issues. In addition, perception of death could improve natural acceptance and then enhance the sense of meaning in life to positively predict nurses’ competence to cope with death. Perception of death could indirectly and positively predict nurses’ competence to cope with death by enhancing natural acceptance or sense of meaning in life. The nurses’ competence to cope with death was moderate. There were three mediating pathways: the separate mediating effect of natural acceptance and meaning of life, and the chain mediating effect of natural acceptance and meaning of life. There was a positive correlation among perception of death, competence to cope with death, the meaning of life, and attitude toward death. The nurses’ scored 125.39 ± 23.88 on the competence to cope with death. MethodsĪ total of 786 nurses from Hunan Province, China, selected by random sampling method and asked to complete an online electronic questionnaire between October and November 2021 were included in the study. To explore whether the perception of death has an indirect effect on competence to cope with death through the mediation of attitude toward death and meaning of life. It is important to understand how the perception of death affects the competence to cope with death. The Nats made what, in retrospect, was a fair market offer to Harper. A few months ago, it seemed almost ridiculous for them not to “test the free-agent market.” Harper has wanted that experience since he was a teenager. This winter, every imaginable factor, and some unimagined ones, have worked against Harper and Boras. Instead, they get hammered with higher penalties every year. Right now, at least on paper, the Nats could get it all done.īut if you throw a $35-million-a-year luxury-tax-exploding Harper contract into the mix, then the Nats never get to “reset” their lux-tax penalties to zero. That’s on top of all this winter’s new salary commitments, which may run as high as $240 million. Those three moves may cost the Nats $350 million between now and the end of the 2022 season. The Nats appear positioned to re-sign (or replace) Scherzer and, in addition, go to the $100-million range for Turner, who is now an All-Star level shortstop in their eyes. Trea Turner becomes a free agent after 2022. Max Scherzer’s current deal expires after 2021. But when teams plan their futures, they make assumptions: The Nats want Rendon. Right now, the Nats have a roster and salary structure that works, at least in theory, for the entire five-year time frame in which they always do their planning.Īs matters now stand, the Nats can afford to sign Anthony Rendon to a five-year extension through 2024 that probably falls between the $115 million and $150 million deals of J.D. But here’s why it probably would be bad baseball business to hamstring themselves that way. My smart editors ask me: Why can’t the Nats just do a short-term deal at high dollars with Harper? Like three or four years at $35 million or more per year? That’s why normally responsible reporters continue to throw the Nats name in the pot: “The game ain’t over until Ted doesn’t sing.” However, Ted Lerner and Boras have done major deals on which they were the only two people involved. So, all normal reporting - for months - says that the Nats are “out” on Harper and have not engaged with him at all, other than a social visit before Christmas initiated by Harper’s side. And he’s the only one who could say “Yes” to a $300-million deal. There is only one person who has not confirmed this: Ted Lerner. The Phils also have excellent prospects, so why hasn’t Harper already signed? Is he screaming, “Nooooo”? Is he waiting for Ted Lerner to say, “Come home?”Īs I’ve written before, Harper is not coming back to the Nats according to team front-office sources, Nats players themselves who’ve analyzed how much the team has spent this winter and even Lerner family friends who’ve been told that “Harper isn’t coming back.” Philly fans are famous for booing, but they give good parades and love their heroes - once they accept you. Harper has a chance to go to one of the great traditional baseball-loving cities in a cozy ballpark that, in 50 games in the past, has cost him some batting-average points but also given him a few extra homers. If they find the money to sign lefty Dallas Keuchel, too, they might go to the World Series. With Harper, the Phillies might win the N.L. Realmuto, shortstop Jean Segura, closer David Robertson and outfielder Andrew McCutchen while only subtracting first baseman Carlos Santana. The Phillies have had a wonderful winter, adding catcher J.T. Harper and Boras have one very large consolation in their stare-down with the Phillies over the final dollar figure. Haven’t heard from them in a couple of months!? There’s your “tell.”Īt least for now, the only other teams outside Philadelphia showing interest in Harper are the 100-loss White Sox, whose top bid to Machado was “only” $250 million in guaranteed money, and the 88-loss Giants, who face a long rebuilding because cornerstones Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner seem past their primes. We really haven’t heard from them in a couple months.” Then, as a decent gesture toward Boras, who also represents Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto, among others, Lerner added the perfunctory sop: “There’s always that ‘the door’s cracked a little bit.’ I have no clue at this point what they’re up to. We’ve filled out our rosterm and we wish nothing but the best.” “Nothing’s certainly changed on our end,” Lerner said. On Friday, Nats principal owner Mark Lerner reiterated almost verbatim what he told a local radio station 10 weeks ago. Some in MLB have believed the rumors - who possibly could have encouraged them? - that the Nats would “circle back” to Harper and give him the option to return to the team and town for whom he’d played his whole career. If so, read through the entire article The muscle memory to Alt+Tab out my desktop was strong, but eventually, the workload involved in leaving Emacs became too costly, and I found myself defaulting to dired. It took me years to realize that Emacs has a file manager built into it. There are features and extensions for Vim, Atom, VS Code, Kate, and many others that make the editor fit neatly into the rest of your system. Many editors have integration features similar to Emacs. Indeed, there's rarely a reason for me to leave Emacs when I need to run a quick command on localhost, or even take a quick glance at an email or PDF. There's very little separation between Emacs and everything else I do. On Emacs, I can open an elisp shell with M-x shell or any terminal with M-x term, I can split screens with M-x 2 and M-x 3, I see everything in its Git context, I can interact with my filesystem with dired, and so on. I want my editor to be fully aware that it's running on Linux I want it to take me $HOME rather than to whatever it thinks is equivalent to My Documents I want it to know that I'm in a Git repository and what branch I've checked out I want it to not only invoke shell commands but the whole shell itself. IntegrationĪ good text editor, in my opinion, ought to feel less like an application and more like a part of your operating system. When using a simple editor, I tend to manage my config files so that I can optimize the way I work and replicate that experience in that editor regardless of what machine I'm using. But most great editors have rich configuration options, and config hacks are essentially what most plugins start out as. Heck, neither Emacs nor Vim had packages when they were starting out, either. Some editors don't have plugins, and that can be considered a feature. Install plugins there, and they're easy to find, maintain, and use. There's a dedicated interface for package browsing and maintenance.Īs of version 8, Vim has an official plugin structure based around the ~/.vim/pack/vendor/start directory. Text editors like Atom and VS Code integrate package management in a similar way as Emacs does. However, for a text editor you use for hours at a time, plugins add important customizations and optimizations. Sometimes the only feature you want in a text editor is simplicity. Not all text editors have plugins, and not all of them need plugins. However, development tends to be pretty fast-paced these days, and so Emacs also has a package command that lets you browse, install, and update plugins from within Emacs. In simpler times, you could download an elisp file (or copy and paste it from the internet) and stash it away in your. Plugins and package managementĮmacs has lots of plugins, and it's hard to imagine using a text editor that doesn't have user-contributed extensions. Here are five great text editor features I learned from Emacs and strive to implement, one way or another, in any text editor I use. That's one reason I use open source! Emacs has a few key features that I consider essential, not necessarily in implementation but in concept. That's how text editors get you, though: You develop a subtle familiarity with an editor such that the "work" of translating thought-whether it's a network design idea, a specific configuration, or a Bash script-into text feels so natural that sometimes you have to type your thoughts just to make sense of them.Īt some point, I accepted that I was an Emacs user, but I like a diverse toolset I like alternatives and options. Overall, superposition is a complex and fascinating principle that is essential for our understanding of the quantum world. This is the basis for the operation of transistors, which are essential components of modern electronics. This can create a pattern of alternating bright and dark regions, known as an interference pattern.Īnother example is the behavior of electrons in a current, which can be in a superposition of multiple states. One example is the phenomenon of interference, which occurs when two waves of the same frequency and amplitude overlap. While superposition may seem like a concept that only applies to the quantum world, it can actually be observed in everyday life. Example of Superposition in Everyday Life Other potential applications of superposition and quantum mechanics include improved sensors, more efficient energy storage devices, and new materials with novel properties. By using entangled particles, it is possible to create a secure communications channel that cannot be intercepted or hacked. Quantum cryptography relies on the principles of superposition to create unbreakable encryption systems. Quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can be in a superposition of multiple states simultaneously, allowing them to perform certain calculations much faster than classical computers. Superposition and other quantum mechanical principles have important implications for new technologies, such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography. This phenomenon has important implications for quantum communication and quantum computing. Quantum mechanics also introduces the concept of entanglement, which occurs when two particles become intrinsically linked, meaning that their properties are correlated, regardless of the distance between them. It is often used in experiments to study the quantum world, such as the double-slit experiment, which demonstrates the wave-like behavior of particles. Superposition is one of the key concepts of quantum mechanics, as it allows us to predict the behavior of particles and systems. It is a complex and counterintuitive theory that challenges our everyday understanding of the world, but is essential for our understanding of the quantum world. Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that studies the behavior of particles and systems on a very small scale, such as atoms and subatomic particles. It also helps us to develop new technologies that rely on quantum mechanics, such as quantum computers and quantum cryptography. Superposition has important implications for our understanding of the quantum world, as it allows us to predict the behavior of particles and systems. Only when the particle is measured or observed, the wavefunction collapses into a single state. When a particle is not observed, it is in a superposition of multiple states, which are represented by a wavefunction. According to this principle, all particles have both wave-like and particle-like properties. The basic principles of superposition are rooted in the wave-particle duality of matter. This principle was first introduced by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926 and has since become an essential component of our understanding of the quantum world. In simple terms, it means that a particle can be in two or more states at once. Superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics that explains how particles can exist in multiple states or locations simultaneously. |
